Sterck School students visit Mineralogical Museum

Kimberly Hanson, a UD researcher who also assists with Mineralogical Museum educational outreach programs
2:34 p.m., April 29, 2005--A group of fourth-graders from the Sterck School for the Deaf visited UD’s Mineralogical Museum Thursday, April 28, as part of their unit on rocks and gems.

Accompanied by a sign-language interpreter, the students with hearing impairments took notes, asked questions and got a close-up look at the specimens in the UD collection.

“The tour gives the students an opportunity to learn more about what they are studying in school, and it also gives them a chance to broaden their experience outside of a school environment,” Kimberly Hanson, a UD researcher who also assists with Mineralogical Museum educational outreach programs, said.

Elementary students often combine visits to the Mineralogical Museum with field trips to the nearby Iron Hill Museum during a fourth-grade study unit on rocks.

Regular museum hours are noon-4 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; and 1-4 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays, but extended hours can be arranged for school tours. For more information on the museum or to schedule a tour, call (302) 831-8242.
