Undergrads present research at CAA conference 9:04 a.m., April 22, 2005--Twelve seniors represented UD at Hofstra University April 1-2 in the third annual undergraduate research conference of the Colonial Academic Alliance, the academic arm of the Colonial Athletic Association. UD Provost Dan Rich, along with the provosts of the other CAA schools, welcomed the students to Hofstra. Danial Jalil, English, and Nathan Field, history, gave oral presentations on representations of attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity disorder (ADD/HD) in childrens literature and on the late French President Charles DeGaulles opposition to Britains membership in the European Community, respectively. Sara Geiger, a fine arts major, exhibited her mixed-media paintings. Poster presentations ranged from Lauren Wares work on French author Guy de Maupassant to Brandon Farmers mathematical modeling of plant growth using chaos theory and the language of fractals. Other poster presentations on research were made by Jared Ali, entomology, on sexual selection in the cucumber beetle; Sherol Chen, computer science, on intelligent agents and entertainment technology; Tyesha Dwight, biology, on biomechanical characterization of a rowing machine; Scott Epstein, chemical engineering, on polymer liquefaction; Nicole Hitchen, biology, on evolutionary genetics in the blue mussel; Sarah Redding, biochemistry, on new water-soluble phosphines; and Krista Velez, music, on tonal vocabulary in second-grade music education. Martha Carothers, associate director of undergraduate studies, and Kevin Etienne-Cummings, project coordinator of the McNair Scholars Program, accompanied the students to Hofstra.
