March of Dimes WalkAmerica set May 1

4:50 p.m., April 4, 2005--Be a hero for the tiniest babies by joining the UD Walk America team on Sunday, May 1, to raise money for the March of Dimes. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and walkers step off at 10 a.m. at the Delaware Field House.

The yearly fund-raiser, which typically draws more than 2,000 walkers, will feature a course that winds through Newark in a four-and-a-half-mile loop that follows South College Avenue to Main Street before heading back toward the field house via Elkton Road and West Park Place.

Snacks will be available along the way, and after completing the course walkers will be treated to lunch from Season’s Pizza in front of UD’s Field House. YoUDee and Baby Blue, as well as UD cheerleaders, will be present to entertain young walkers, and face-painting and balloon sculpting activities will round out the entertainment for the family-oriented event.

To encourage University commitment to the cause, the first 50 members of the University community who register with $50 in pledges also will receive a free UD Walk T-shirt designed by Lane McLaughlin, an art director in the Office of Public Relations.

The event, which last year raised more than $312,000, helped fund education, research, community programs and advocacy for the March of Dimes, an organization committed to preventing birth defects and infant mortality.

Brochures with registration information are available at the Trabant and Perkins Student Centers, the Carpenter Sports Building, the Employee Wellness Center, Clayton Hall, the Bob Carpenter Center and other locations around campus.
