Public transportation planning meetings set statewide

9:32 a.m., Aug. 11, 2005--Interested persons are encouraged to participate in the development of the state’s future transportation program by attending public meetings to be held in September. During the meetings, which are jointly sponsored by the Council on Transportation, the Dover Kent Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the Wilmington Area Planning Council (WILMAPCO), citizens and transportation officials will review the MPOs’ and DelDOT’s final Capital Transportation Program (CTP) for fiscal years 2006-11.

The meetings provide an opportunity to review the current CTP and suggest transportation projects and services to be considered for the proposed CTP for fiscal years 2007-12. Public input received during the September meetings is crucial to the development of this program.

Each meeting will have an informal workshop session beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a brief presentation and opportunity for public input in an auditorium session at 7 p.m. A court reporter will be available during both sessions to record formal comments.

Interested persons also are invited to submit written comments during the public meeting process and these also will be included in the formal record of the CTP meetings.

The meetings will be held:

  • In Kent County at the DelDOT Administration Building, Farmington/Felton Conference Room, 800 Bay Road, Dover, on Wednesday, Sept. 7;
  • In Sussex County at the DelDOT Georgetown Administration Building, Conference Room, 23697 DuPont Highway, Georgetown, on Thursday, Sept. 8; and
  • In New Castle County at WILMAPCO, Conference Room, 850 Library Ave., Newark, on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

These locations are accessible to persons with disabilities. Anyone having special needs or requiring special aid, such as an interpreter for the hearing impaired, should contact DelDOT by phone or mail one week in advance.

Questions, comments and written material can be submitted to: Darrel Cole, Manager, Public Relations, Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 778, Dover, DE 19903. For more information, call 1-800-652-5600 (in Delaware) or (302) 760-2080.

The Council on Transportation, appointed by the governor, includes citizens from every county in the state. MPOs are composed of representatives from state, county and local governments and citizen and technical representatives. Mandated by 29 Delaware Code, section 8409, these meetings are designed to ensure that the public has ample opportunity to participate in the planning process.
