Career Services Center a resource for recent grads

Jack Townsend, director of UD’s MBNA Career Services Center, discusses resume preparation with grad students Jenifer Whetsel (left) and Keegan Mills.
11:07 a.m., July 19, 2005--UD’s MBNA Career Services Center is ready and able to assist new UD grads in their search for employment.

Jack Townsend, director of the center, said job searches for new graduates can be long and frustrating, so recent grads need to stick with it to be successful.

“Enthusiasm, persistence, attitude, hard work, careful preparation of resumes and reviewing interviews are a start,” he said.

Townsend said that after students graduate, they can continue to search the job listings posted in the online eRecruting database on the center’s web site [www.udel.edu/CSC/index.html].

“Our web site also lists several sites that emphasize opportunities for new college graduates,” he said. “They [the graduates] need to be using these rather than Monster.com or Career Builder-type sites.”

The center will help new graduates put together resumes and portfolios for up to six months after graduation with no charge, he said. After that time, graduates can pay $25 for six more months of service.

“Alumni can do this at any time,” he said. “We see alumni from 15-25 years out.”

Graduates can receive individual assistance from staff members focused on their particular colleges or majors when selecting a career, building a resume, preparing for interviews or conducting a job search.

Besides supporting students in their career searches, the center has a special section of its web site listing tips for parents on how they can help their own and other students find employment.

The web site offers parents tips on “The Career Success Plan” and the opportunity to help other UD students. It also has a section on “Bragging Rights,” which highlights why a degree from UD is valuable, and a section of frequently asked questions from other parents.

The center’s web site offers recent grads and current students several sections for career preparation, including resource kits, a career library, Workshops on Demand web presentations, career handouts, career guide, alumni career network, career newsletters, request a career programs, individual career, appointments and forms that might be needed.

The site also lists upcoming career fairs on campus for a variety of different majors and interests, as well as a listing of available part-time, full-time, volunteer, campus and summer jobs. There also are links to many corporate web sites.
