Parents get in the swim of things 11:47 a.m., March 15, 2005--When UD swim team parents attended the Colonial Athletic Association championships at George Mason University in February, they did more than cheer their swimmers and divers on--they dressed for the occasion. They sported hats, beads with their students pictures hanging from them and, this year, added yellow bandanas imprinted with YoUDees image. Its a tradition at the championships, Marybeth Avioli, whose daughter, senior Kristen Avioli, holds the backstroke record, said. The parents of each school wear something related to their college or university. The George Mason parents wore colonial hats; the Towson parents wore hardhats; the James Mason parents had special T-shirts. We also had banners. Part of the idea is to let students know where their parents are sitting in the stands and also to show our spirit and support of the UD swim team. Sherry Stephens, mother of Sara Stephens, who holds the UD record for butterfly and won first place in butterfly at the championships, had the idea for the bandanas. The parents sought official approval from Barbara Kreppel, associate vice president in the Office of Administrative Services, to use the Struttin YoUDee image on the bandanas and had them made up by Small Printing in Wilmington. Team members also were given the bandanas. Parents werent the only ones who get dressed up for the championships, Avioli said. The womens team wore crowns, garlands and the yellow bandanas on different nights during the pre-meet parade of swimmers. The mens team wore special T-shirts.
