Softball tourney raises Katrina relief funds

4:24 p.m., Oct. 27, 2005--UD’s Panhellenic Conference and the Interfraternity Council (IFC) held their first annual Greek softball tournament, “Pitch-in for Katrina,” on Sunday, Oct. 23, to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Eight sororities and six fraternities participated in the event and raised more than $1,500 for the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Katrina Fund.

Ashley Vallillo, president of Panhellenic Conference, said she was pleased with the success of the event.

“Since this was the first softball tournament we’ve done, I was surprised that so many people came out to play and support us,” Vallillo said. “With the Greek community working together, we made this event a huge success that can be continued for many years.”

Ashleigh Rich, Panhellenic vice president, and Rob DelPriore, IFC vice president of external relations, organized and ran the softball tournament as a way for fraternities and sororities to work together on campus.

Sorority and fraternity members involved in the tournament purchased T-shirts for $10 a piece to help support the event. Alpha Epsilon Phi, Phi Sigma Sigma and Lambda Chi Alpha all had 100 percent of their members buy T-shirts, and a donation is being made on their behalf to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Katrina Fund.

Community sponsors of the event included Cucina di Napoli, Grotto Pizza, Newark Deli and Bagel and Streamlight Inc.
