‘Sea Grant Reporter’ hits newsstands June 14

11:31 a.m., June 13, 2005--Most Delawareans share an ongoing interest, curiosity and concern about the ocean, bays and tributaries that play such a significant role in the state’s heritage. Each year, UD’s College of Marine Studies publishes the University of Delaware Sea Grant Reporter, a lively, informative, illustrated update about its research and educational activities as a Sea Grant institution, encouraging Delawareans to become informed, become involved and stay connected through the various programs of the college.

The annual report, which was presented to the governor and General Assembly last week, will be distributed to the public as an insert in the Wilmington News Journal on Tuesday, June 14. The report also will be available online on June 14 at [www.ocean.udel.edu/publications/Newsletter/reporter/2005/].

Nancy Targett, interim director of the UD Sea Grant College Program and interim dean of the College of Marine Studies, introduces the report with a welcoming letter, “Exploring the Ocean We Treasure with an Eye to the Future,” focusing on the importance of the “high-priority research and outreach initiatives that will foster the wide use, conservation and management of Delaware’s marine resources.”

Other highlights include the Delaware Bay Observing System using Fourteen Foot Bank Lighthouse as a base; “Using High-Tech ‘Eyes’ to Monitor the Sea”; information about blue crab and horseshoe crab populations; the creation of a web site on oil spills; the use of satellites to study seas and bays; and a summary of the college’s outreach and educational activities, including Coast Day. Throughout the issue are profiles of faculty, staff and graduate students and their research projects.

Public input is sought on coastal issues through a survey, and those responding will be eligible for drawing for a Great Coastal Gift Package, including a weekend at the Virden Center in Lewes. The Reporter also lists volunteer opportunities, and readers are invited to sign up for the college’s newsletter, At Sea! and to visit the Sea Grant web site at [www.ocean.udel.edu].
