UD men’s rowing completes season

9:43 a.m., May 19, 2005--The University of Delaware Men’s Rowing Club ended the spring racing season last weekend with the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia and the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass.

The heavyweight crews competed at the 67th annual Dad Vail Regatta. The UD varsity heavyweight fours finished in fourth place in its initial heat, with only the top two boats advancing. The heavyweight eight crew finished fourth in its heat and advanced to the second heat, where it finished fifth. UD had a strong showing in the freshman heavyweight eight, where the crew finished second in its heat and reached the semifinals.

UD lightweight crews competed in the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges’ prestigious Eastern Sprints championship regatta. UD’s third varsity crew finished fifth in their heat, and the second varsity crew qualified for the petite final after finishing fifth in their heat. They went on to finish sixth in the petite final. The first varsity crew also qualified for the petite final, where they finished fourth, approximately three seconds off of the first-place crew.

In addition, UD had two freshman crews racing at the Eastern Sprints. The second freshman crew had a strong showing, finishing third and ahead of teams from both Harvard and Cornell. They got off to a powerful start and continued to demonstrate that strength throughout the duration of the race. It was a rewarding finish, as the crew had finished behind Harvard at a race earlier this spring. UD’s first freshman boat finished third in its petite final.

The UD Men’s Rowing Club team currently has a bid in for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, which is the national championship regatta. Should the bid be granted, the first varsity lightweight crew would have an opportunity to compete against the best in the United States for the national title.
