Newark Police investigate attempted armed robbery

11:10 a.m., May 31, 2005--Newark Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery at the after-hours deposit box at Wachovia Bank, 622 South College Ave., that occurred at 10 a.m., Sunday, May 29.

A Boston Market employee was making a deposit at the after-hours depository when he was confronted by a man who pointed a gun at him and demanded the money. The employee had just dropped the money into the depository, so the suspect tried to remove the victim’s wallet from his pocket, but he resisted. At that time, a pickup truck pulled up in the parking lot, and the driver began blowing the horn. The startled suspect ran away, going between South Gate Garden Apartments and the Sleep Inn.

The suspect is described at 5 foot 9 inches to 6 foot 3 inches tall, with an average build, wearing a gray and green hooded jacked that zipped up the front.

Investigators would like to speak to the driver of the silver or gray pickup truck, who is believed to have witnessed the struggle.

Anyone with information should contact the Newark Police at (302) 366-7110, ext. 135 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
