Newark Police investigate weekend robberies

4:37 p.m., May 16, 2005--Newark Police are investigating three weekend robberies, two of which involved UD students. Newark Police have already made an arrest in one case.

On Saturday, May 14, a student’s cell phone was stolen while he was attending a party on Academy Street around 4:30 a.m. He called his cell phone, and one of the suspects answered. The suspect told the student he could get his phone back if he met him near the 7-11 store at South Chapel Street and Delaware Avenue. When the student went to this area, he was met by three men in their early 20s who assaulted him and took an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects fled in a light colored, four-door sedan. The student suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

Newark Police have made an arrest in this case. A general broadcast was put out for the suspects’ vehicle, and Sunday night, a Newark Police officer saw the vehicle and stopped it. Michael Schorah, 20, of Elkton, Md., was arrested and charged with first degree robbery, conspiracy in the second degree, offensive touching of a law enforcement officer and theft under $1,000. He is incarcerated at the Howard Young Correctional Facility, in lieu of $11,500 bond. Investigation is ongoing into the identities of the other two suspects.

Two separate incidents with similar suspects occurred around 5 a.m., Sunday, May 15. In the first, an individual was walking alone on Paper Mill Road, near Creek View Road, when five men in their early 20s assaulted him as he walked past. They took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot. The victim suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

A few minutes later, a student was walking alone to his car in the parking lot in front of the 500 building of Scholar Drive, when he was approached by five young men. They assaulted him and took an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects fled on foot toward Delaware Avenue. Newark Police and Delaware State Police K-9 officers searched the area without success. The student suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

Anyone with information on these incidents should contact Detective Scott Rieger of the Newark Police at (302) 366-7110, ext. 131, or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
