Police charge man for burglary of students

8:56 a.m., Oct. 24, 2005--Newark Police charged Darren I. Hayman, 38, of Newark, on Oct. 22 for a burglary that took place around 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21, at the home of three UD students on New London Road.

A UD student called Newark Police when she came home and saw an unknown man inside the house she shares with two other students, neither of whom was at home at the time. The suspect fled with property before the police arrived.

The police found that entry had been gained by throwing a brick through a rear bedroom window, and personal property was missing. A search of the area with the assistance of a canine unit from the New Castle County Police Department found nothing.

Later that night, a Newark Police officer found a man who matched the description of the suspect. When questioned, he gave a false name to the officer. He was identified as Darren Hayman and found to have an outstanding warrant issued by the Justice of the Peace Court 11 for failure to appear for work referral. Hayman was then placed under arrest for the outstanding warrant and for criminal impersonation. A subsequent search found him to be possession of property taken from the New London Road house.

Hayman was charged with burglary in the second degree, three counts of theft, criminal mischief and criminal impersonation. He was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court and transported to Gander Hill in lieu of $2,500 secured bond.
