Grad programs cited among nation’s best

12:05 a.m., April 1, 2005--UD’s graduate program in chemical engineering is again rated among the 10 best in the nation, the criminology doctoral program is ranked 14th and graduate teacher education at UD has moved higher in the top ranks in the forthcoming 2006 edition of U.S.News & World Report’s “America’s Best Graduate Schools.”

New ratings for the 2006 edition also include graduate programs in other engineering disciplines, as well as the departments of English, history and psychology.

Overall, UD’s College of Engineering was ranked 47th in graduate education, tied with Arizona State University. Other UD graduate engineering disciplines ranked this year are

  • Department of Chemical Engineering, tied at 10th with the University of California at Santa Barbara;
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering, tied at 47th with Washington University in St. Louis;
  • Department of Materials Science and Engineering, tied at 50th with Clemson University, Dartmouth College and the universities of Cincinnati, Tennessee-Knoxville and Utah;
  • Department of Civil Engineering, tied at 62nd with Clarkson, Louisiana State, Northeastern, Oklahoma State and Oregon State universities and the universities of Oklahoma and Pittsburgh; and
  • Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, tied at 73rd with Clemson University and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

    In UD’s College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, the School of Education’s graduate program was ranked at 40, tying with Washington University in St. Louis. UD also is featured in a chart, “Teacher preparation at the top education schools,” which includes information on accreditation, enrollment, number of full-time faculty and preparation offered for national certification.

    Four Ph.D. programs in the College of Arts and Sciences are ranked this year:

  • Criminology is ranked at 14, tied with Northeastern University;
  • English is ranked at 61, tied with Louisiana State, Michigan State, Syracuse, Temple, Texas A&M and Tufts universities and the universities of Connecticut, Georgia, Kansas and Oregon;
  • History is ranked at 68, tied with Binghamton, Purdue and Tulane universities, Teachers College at Columbia University and the University of Missouri-Columbia; and
  • Psychology (Research) is ranked at 123, tied with Arizona State, Brandeis, Case Western Reserve, Clark, Michigan State, Rutgers State and Tufts universities and the universities of Denver, Kansas, Nebraska-Lincoln and Washington.

    “Faculty and students should be pleased by this national recognition of these graduate programs,” Provost Dan Rich said. “The University has many other graduate programs that are recognized to be among the best in their fields but were not included in this rating report.”

    The University of Delaware currently has nearly 3,400 students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in 118 degree programs across all seven colleges.

    “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” a newsstand book, will be available on April 4, and some of the ranking information also will appear in the April 11 edition of U.S.News & World Report, which goes on sale the same day.
