Delaware teachers participate in Democracy Project Institute

1:36 p.m., June 22, 2005--Thirteen Delaware elementary, middle and secondary school teachers are participating in the seventh annual Democracy Project Institute for Teachers at UD.

The institute, being held June 20-24, will reconvene Monday-Friday, Aug. 15-19. Several workshops also will be held during the 2005-06 school year.

At the institute, teachers will hear from politicians, journalists, jurists, lobbyists and appointed staff who will recount their experiences and challenges and then engage the teachers in discussions.

Institute presenters include Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner; U.S. Sens. Joseph Biden and Thomas Carper; U.S. Rep. Michael Castle; Leo Strine, vice chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery; Superior Court Judge Peggy Ableman; and John Taylor, editorial page editor of the Wilmington News Journal.

Also included will be trips to Washington, D.C., the port of Wilmington and the state capitol in Dover.

As part of the Institute, the teachers will develop innovative lesson plans to take back to their classrooms. Teachers also will participate in workshops on Delaware’s social studies standards.

The institute is sponsored by UD’s Institute for Public Administration, Delaware Secretary of State Harriet Windsor and the Delaware Department of State. Support also is provided by the Delaware Heritage Commission.
