Police announce plan to reduce assaults

5:02 p.m., Oct. 20, 2005--Newark Police today announced a plan to reduce the number of assaults and related issues associated with parties that involve alcohol. The plan comes in response to an increase in the number of such assaults over the past few weekends.

Under the plan, the police will have zero tolerance for any party or noise complaint, and officers will take action on any loud party or noise violations they observe, even if a complaint has not been made.

Newark citizens are being asked to notify the Newark Police Department of any addresses that have been a problem in the past, so that frequent checks can be made. Contact person is the police department's crime prevention officer M/Cpl. Tracy Simpson at (302) 366-7110, ext. 129.

UD Public Safety will assist Newark Police by providing officers, who will work together with Newark Police, on an overtime basis enforcing loud party and noise violations. The Newark Police Department will fund these officers through a grant from the Office of Highway Safety targeted at reducing underage drinking.

Letters are being sent to all landlords notifying them of the plan. Landlords are being asked to notify their tenants and ask for their cooperation.
