Lab School students get botany lesson
Taken to complement a classroom unit on flowers and insects, the morning excursion gave the group of three-year-olds and their chaperones a lesson in botany and flower arranging and a chance to enjoy the UD campus in full bloom. According to UD senior Lena Costa, an early childhood development and education major from Bala Cynwyd, Pa., currently finishing her student teaching practicum at the Lab School, the outing also gave students a chance to augment their classroom knowledge with the real-world experience of an expert. Bryan Greim, the owner of Main Street Florist & Plant Shop, gave students a tour of his shop and talked about all the different types of flowers and their lifespans, Costa said. Students got to learn about various types of plants, as well as the many different types of flower colors, petals and shapes. At the end of the visit, Costa added, each student got a yellow daisy to take home, as well as new knowledge that will assist them with their classroom Flower Shop project--a student-run shop set up back at the Lab School thats designed to teach young learners about plants and customer-consumer roles. It was a really fun morning, and students were excited about how much they learned, Costa said. Everyone had a really enjoyable lesson.
