Newark Police step up patrols

1:32 p.m., Sept. 13, 2005--More than 100 criminal charges and four traffic charges were lodged by Newark Police against individuals, the majority of them University of Delaware students, on Sept. 9-10, as part of a special effort to combat order-maintenance violations.

The Newark Police Department’s Special Operations Unit, which includes the Alcohol Enforcement Unit, began conducting uniform and plainclothes patrols Sept. 1 throughout the city.

In addition to the traffic charges, the enforcement activity resulted in 87 alcohol violations, 12 disorderly conduct charges, eight loud party charges, one assault charge and one weapons charge.

According to Lt. Thomas LeMin of Newark Police, the department will continue the details throughout the fall semester “to maintain a high standard of living for all city residents.”
