Creative students make an odyssey to UD 4:43 p.m., March 10, 2005--Odyssey of the Mind, an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students in a friendly competition, is coming on campus this Saturday. This is the 25th year of Odyssey of the Mind in Delaware and the fourth year the event has been hosted by UDs College of Engineering. The March 12 event will involve 116 teams, with 763 students and 189 coaches from 53 Delaware elementary, middle and high schools taking part. Students in kindergarten through second grade exhibit but do not compete. In the state, DELCAPS (Delaware Creative Activities and Problem Solving) is in charge of the program. During the school year, each team chooses one of five competitive problems to solve, which appeal to a wide range of interests. Some are technical, others are artistic or performance-oriented. This weekend, the students will present their solutions, and winning teams are chosen for each of the five problems at each level. A minimum of 15 winning teams will compete in the annual Odyssey of the Mind World Finals, May 21-24, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. DELCAPS is directed by Ron Raab-Long and Mary Kay Valentine, and Kathleen Werrell, assistant dean of engineering who does outreach activities for the College of Engineering, is coordinating the Odyssey of the Mind event at UD. The program has grown tremendously, according to Raab-Long, and part of this can be attributed to being able to hold the tournament at the University. The event also is a good way to introduce bright, creative students to UD, he said. Article by Sue Moncure To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
