Prof. Newton commended by Wilmington City Council

James Newton
9:44 a.m., July 28, 2005--James Newton, recently retired professor of Black American Studies at UD, and a senior fellow in what is now the Center for Community Research and Service at UD, was commended in a July 7 resolution by the Wilmington City Council for his “outstanding service.”

The resolution, sponsored by council member Theopalis K. Gregory, cited Newton for his expertise in African-American studies and for his books The Principles of Diversity, A Curriculum Evaluation on Student Knowledge of Afro-American Life and History and The Other Slaves: Mechanics, Artisans and Craftsmen, which he coedited.

In addition, Newton was commended for his involvement in civic and community activities as a board member of the Walnut Street YMCA, the Delaware State Arts Council, Public Allies and the Delaware Art Museum and for sharing his knowledge with others through community work and speaking engagements.

The resolution concludes by saluting Newton for a “job well done” and thanking him for his “continuous work in preserving and expounding rich African-American history.”

A graduate of North Carolina Central University, Newton earned a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of North Carolina and a doctorate from Illinois State University.
