Murals of campus scenes brighten HR lobby

9:22 a.m., June 28, 2005--Three new murals of familiar campus scenes were installed June 23 in the lobby of UD’s Office of Human Resources at 413 Academy St.

Originally suggested by Maxine Colm, vice president for administration, to brighten the lobby of the Office of Human Resources, the murals depict three popular views from The Green and Mentors’ Circle and showcase the University during the seasons of spring, summer and fall. Reproductions of recent color photographs, they are printed on long-lasting vinyl panels and range from 20 feet by 8 1/2 feet to 14 feet by 12 feet.

“Now the mural-sized photographs of the campus add warmth and a welcoming feel to the entire area,” Colm said. “I’m delighted with the new look!”

According to Richie Holland, human resources manager, the murals also have enjoyed a popular reception from UD personnel, students and visitors to the lobby.

“The murals add elements of space and color to what before was simply a typical office waiting area,” Holland said. “The scenes showcase all the recent landscaping work done on campus while staying true to the University’s heritage, so viewers get a glimpse of both progress and history.”

Monnie Givens, associate director for creative services in the Office of Public Relations, who directed and managed the production and installation of the murals, said that after discussing the project with Colm, the three scenes seemed especially fitting because they depicted the beauty of the campus while reflecting the seasonal shifts of the academic year as well.

“We’re happy with the work, and it certainly makes a difference in the environment of the lobby,” he said. “I was pleased during the installation at all the nice things I heard being said about them.”
