UD rowing club wins invitation

10:53 a.m., April 18, 2005--The University of Delaware men’s lightweight crews have been invited to compete at the prestigious Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges’ spring championship regatta, to be held May 15 in Worchester, Mass.

The lightweight crews are part of the UD men’s club rowing program, and the invitation was extended to club coach Chuck Crawford after a strong showing Sunday in a race-off against the lightweight crews from the College of the Holy Cross. By competing at Eastern sprints, the UD athletes will be able to go up against some of the fastest lightweight crews in the nation.

The first crews to race Sunday were the top varsity lightweights, and UD finished the 2000-meter course in 6:09.4, defeating Holy Cross by approximately 12 seconds. The second varsity lightweight crew from UD also finished very well, completing the course in 6:34.0, approximately 17 seconds ahead of the boat from Holy Cross.

Capping off a successful series of races for UD was a one-two finish for the freshmen lightweight boats. The first freshmen boat from UD finished the course in 6:25.7, and the second freshmen boat crossed the finish line in 6:48.36, approximately 12 seconds ahead of third-place Holy Cross.

UD men’s crew, both lightweights and heavyweights, will compete at the Colonial Athletic Association championships in Philadelphia, on Saturday, April 23. The following week will see the lightweights competing in Mercer, N.J., against Rutgers University and Georgetown University.
