UD men’s rowing in weekend action

12:55 p.m., April 11, 2005--The University of Delaware men’s rowing club had its first weekend of competition since spring break this past weekend, which began with the freshman heavyweights competing in the George Washington University Crew Invitational Classic in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, April 9.

The first freshman heavyweight boat qualified for the petite final and ultimately finished the 2000-meter course in a time of 7:11.70 seconds, good enough for seventh place overall. In addition, the second freshman heavyweight boat completed the course with a time of 6:04.9, earning them third place in their heat and the distinction of being three seconds off of the first place time.

Also competing on Saturday were the varsity lightweight crews, which raced against St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. The top UD varsity eights boat won with a time of 5:27.5. UD’s second varsity boat, in the same race as the top varsity boats from Delaware and St. Joseph’s, completed the course in third place, with a time of 5:48.

In the varsity fours event, UD’s A boat defeated St. Joseph’s with a time of 6:22.7 and UD’s B boat finished third with a time of 6:49.1.

Completing this weekend of racing was a much-anticipated match-up between Harvard, Georgetown, Colombia and UD, as each of these schools has a reputation for strong lightweight crews. UD’s freshman lightweights completed the course in fourth place with a time of 6:21.6, finishing behind Georgetown by only 0.4 seconds. In the second freshman lightweight event, the crew from UD finished with a time of 6:43.2, crossing the line behind Harvard by less than two seconds.

The top UD varsity eights crew completed the course in third place, defeating Colombia but falling just short of Harvard and Georgetown. Their time was 5:59.9. Both the second and third varsity lightweight crews also made their presence known against the difficult Ivy League crews.

The UD team will compete in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in New Jersey on Saturday, April 16, and in a race-off for the final spot at the prestigious Eastern Sprints regatta against Holy Cross on Sunday, April 17.
