Leila Lyons elected head of ACM SIGUCCS

Leila Lyons, director of IT-User Services
9:42 a.m., July 28, 2005--Leila Lyons, director of IT-User Services at UD, has been named executive committee chairperson of the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on University and College Computing Services (ACM SIGUCCS).

“It’s a great organization for people like myself who are IT professionals in higher education,” Lyons said. “Over the years, I’ve served on conference committees and co-edited the newsletter. I was pleased to be offered the opportunity to serve on the board.”

SIGUCCS is an association of professionals who support and manage information technology services at higher education institutions.

Lyons said the chairperson and the past chairpersons of SIGUCCS elect two candidates to run for the executive committee chairperson position, and then the members vote electronically to choose one.

“I wrote a platform statement to go with the election materials,” she said.
“Candidates for chair are generally selected because of the position that they have held in the organization and their interest in serving the organization further.”

Lyons is a graduate of City University in London and has a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics. She began working part time for UD’s computing center in 1974 and became director of IT-User Services in 1992. In September 2003, she was inducted into the SIGUCCS Hall of Fame for her support of the organization for more than 20 years.

As head of SIGUCCS, Lyons’ responsibilities include ensuring the mission of the organization is met, leading direction-setting for products to be offered and developing a team of officers who work together to provide a positive working relationship.

Lyons said other responsibilities include “promoting technical excellence through programs and activities; providing services to members and subscribers; promoting leadership and volunteerism in the field and administering SIGUCCS in compliance with ACM policies.”
