Letter reminds students of alcohol, drug policies

2:25 p.m., Sept. 15, 2005--An e-mail stating the University’s alcohol and drug policy was sent to all UD students, from Cynthia E. Cummings, associate vice president for campus life, Saturday, Sept. 10.

Summarizing the University’s stance on alcohol and drug use by students, the letter provides information on web sites students could visit for more information, as well as phone numbers of health and counseling resources on campus.

“University regulations clearly prohibit the unauthorized possession, use, manufacture, distribution or sale of alcoholic beverages on University property or in University facilities,” the letter states. “In addition, students are prohibited from using drugs, possessing drugs or drug paraphernalia and from selling or otherwise distributing drugs, and violations of these policies will result in immediate sanctions within the University's Student Judicial System.”

The letter, which explains that consumption of alcohol and drugs is not compatible with the academic, social and professional goals of the University, lists the objectives of the substance-abuse programs in place at UD, including creating a campus environment that provides and reinforces healthy, responsible living and respect for community and campus standards and regulations.

Outlining the consequences encountered by violators, the letter also specifies the serious nature of alcohol and drug charges and makes it clear that students are not granted special status by the law.

“If students are found guilty of violating any local, state or federal laws concerning alcohol and drugs, they will receive significant sanctions,” the letter states. “These penalties may include fines and mandatory prison terms. The state of Delaware, in particular, has very strict minimum mandatory sentencing laws for the selling of drugs.”

Recipients of the letter also were provided with clinical information about the physical dangers, both long- and short-term, brought about by the use of alcohol, marijuana, Ecstasy, anabolic steroids, Rohypnol, cocaine, heroin and other illegal substances.
