UD increases reward, establishes scholarship fund

12:01 p.m., May 12, 2005--In a message sent May 12 to members of the University of Delaware community, UD President David P. Roselle praised campus colleagues for their support of students and each other in the days following the May 1 murder of sophomore Lindsey Bonistall.

He also advised students to take advantage of the counseling services available to them and to be aware of precautions they should take for their own safety, and he urged parents and faculty to talk to their students about how they are coping with the situation.

Roselle also announced in the e-mail that the University of Delaware and persons who have been moved by the tragedy have added to the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Ms. Bonistall’s murderer and said that a scholarship has been established in her memory.

Noting that Ms. Bonistall’s loss is “one we all share,” Roselle said the University will add $15,000 to the previously announced $10,000 reward, bringing the total to $25,000, an amount that Newark Police said would aid their efforts.

In addition, a $50,000 fund in Ms. Bonistall’s memory has been established to support scholarships for students pursuing her major, journalism studies.

In the e-mail, Roselle praised the members of the University community for the way they have dealt with the tragedy.

“Some colleagues have worked to ensure that our students are safe and to provide whatever services are appropriate,” he wrote. “Others have promulgated information to the campus community as that became available.

“And, we have all learned what a bright, caring and committed individual Lindsey was and what an asset she was to the University of Delaware,” Roselle said.

Roselle also wrote: “Thank you for pulling together and evidencing that we are members of a community, albeit one coping with a tragic situation. Special thanks to those of you who have been able to demonstrate to the Bonistall Family that they are not alone in their sorrow, and that the death of Lindsey Bonistall is a personal loss to many individuals and to the entire University of Delaware community.”
