5:48 p.m., May 17, 2005--In an auditorium filled with well-wishers, 252 UD students of Hispanic heritage, with grade point averages of 3.0 or higher, were recognized for their academic achievements at the Latino/Latina Students of Distinction ceremony on Friday, May 13.

UD President David Roselle welcomed students, family, friends and faculty to the ceremony, and Juan Villamarin, retired professor of anthropology and former chairperson of the Department of Anthropology, delivered the keynote address.

Villamarin credited Roselle for hastening the cultural diversity that exists today at UD. He said Roselle changed UD’s internal structure by encouraging diversity and making the campus a more welcoming place for minorities.

Villamarin advised students to celebrate their Hispanic heritage and said that, while many students don’t consider themselves Hispanic but identify with their ancestral homelands, they all share a common bond. He urged Latinos and Latinas to participate in activities that will “make your presence known” and lauded those who have organized groups like HOLA and Hispanic sororities and fraternities.

Villamarin concluded his remarks by noting that inequality still exists, and there is still much to do, but, he told the students they can succeed as long as they develop a “strong sense of identity,” always remembering who they are.

Below is a list of Latino/Latina Students of Distinction provided by the Office of Affirmative Action and Multicultural Programs.
