Fraternity raises funds for Katrina victims

7:08 p.m., Sept. 6, 2005--A University of Delaware fraternity raised more than $360 in the first day of its KAndy for Katrina Relief drive--with one student donating $40.

“People are very generous. They’re throwing money at us,” John Holmes, a junior biology major and Kappa Alpha (KA) fraternity member, said.

Fund-raising for hurricane victims was a suggestion from KA’s national office, according to chapter president Greg Good, a senior majoring in political science and English. He said the chapter chose to give away candy and ask for donations to the American Red Cross.

“We’re trying to get $1,000 by Friday, and we’re well on our way. I think we’re going to surpass our goal,’’ Good said.

About 40 of the 62 Kappa Alpha members already had signed up to staff the candy stand in front of the fraternity’s Amstel Avenue house, Good said, and they hoped to collect on both sides of the street beginning Wednesday.

Brett Connolly, a junior finance major who collected Tuesday, said he visited New Orleans this summer and was moved to help when he saw televised shots of the city after the flood. “It’s horrible, what I’ve seen, so this is the least I could do,” Connolly said.

“The whole point of us doing this is so that others around the campus who feel the same way as we do have an easy way to donate money to the Red Cross,” Geoff Currie, a junior accounting major, said.

Donations are being accepted from 10 a.m-4 p.m. through Friday in front of the KA house at 19 Amstel Ave. Those who donate $1 or more receive a raffle ticket for a drawing to win a gift certificate at a Main Street shop.
