Free iTunes, more in DelaWorld book bag
4:09 p.m., June 30, 2005--To help impress upon new students that expectations for responsible computing practices may be different at UD, IT-User Services, the UD Bookstore and the Office of Public Relations got together to encourage responsible computing in an innovative and upbeat way.
Incoming freshman and transfer students attending DelaWorld 101 orientation sessions this summer receive a UD Bookstore canvas tote bag emblazoned with the legend iTunes: Download it Now! and containing an iTunes CD package.
Sponsored by Apple Computer and Coca-Cola, the iTunes CD and packaging introduce students to the Universitys policies on downloading music and include software for students to become iTunes users and to learn about responsible computing on campus. Decorated with a dancing YouDee listening to an iPod, the iTunes package, also allows new students to download two free songs from the Internet.
At Delaworld 101, UD is giving each new student a CD containing iTunes software and codes for two free songs from the iTunes catalog, Leila Lyons, director of IT-User Services, said. The CD also includes information about UDs Code of the Web: Compute responsibly, follow the rules and know the severe consequences for breaking the rules. The iTunes on Campus program and CD are two ways UD is presenting a legal alternative for students who wish to download music.
University of Delaware students must accept all the responsibility of owning and managing a computer, including observing the copyright laws of the United States, Lyons said. UD's membership in Apple's iTunes on Campus program gives the students an opportunity to download music legally and responsibly.
The canvas bag, which also includes a discount coupon for UD items at the Bookstore, features on the reverse side of the bag a popular bookstore promotion called Hoodie Tuesday, which gives special discounts to students wearing hooded sweatshirts or jackets throughout the academic year.
