Muqtedar Khan, assistant professor of political science and international relations, discussed the removal of Israeli settlers from Gaza during a segment on the Aug. 18 WHYY-TV Delaware Tonight news program. Khan was quoted in an Aug. 7 Associated Press story about a Fiqh Council of North America fatwa condemning terrorism, saying the edict would “have had more punch” if it had been less general and more specific about the terrorist attacks in the U.S. Kahn also was quoted in a July 28 Chicago Tribune story on the fatwa and spoke on the To the Point program on KCRW-FM, a National Public Radio affiliate, about terrorism and Western foreign policy.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in Aug. 19 stories in both the Los Angeles Times and Reuters concerning new rules that will require Walt Disney Co. board members who fail to get majority support in company elections to submit letters of resignation. Also, Elson was quoted in an Aug. 18 Reuters story about a controversy surrounding the chief operating officer at Restoration Hardware and in an Aug. 12 Associated Press column on the fallout from the Disney ruling in the Delaware Court of Chancery.

Ismat Shah, professor of materials science and engineering and faculty adviser for the Muslim Student Association, was quoted in an Aug. 19 News Journal story about the removal of Israeli settlers from the Gaza strip.

Laurence Kalkstein, senior fellow at the Center for Climatic Research, was quoted in a front page Wall Street Journal story on Aug. 18 concerning federal utility bill assistance. Such aid is skewed toward cold weather states despite the fact that extreme heat claims a large number of lives each year.

Ralph Begleiter, Edward and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Distinguished Journalist in Residence at UD, was featured in an Aug. 17 News Journal story about the showing of photographs of flag-draped coffins bearing the remains of soldiers killed in Iraq at a church hall in Wilmington. The Pentagon recently released new photographs as part of a settlement with Begleiter, who made a Freedom of Information request and filed a lawsuit last year claiming the images should be made public.

Maria Pippidis, Cooperative Extension family and consumer science educator, was quoted in Aug. 17 stories in the Delaware State News and the News Journal concerning back to school shopping.

Dr. Vincent Disabella, sports medicine physician, was quoted in an Aug. 17 News Journal story about high school athletes preparing for the fall season. He recommends athletes prepare ahead of time, work out in moderation and vary their activities.

Eric Fang, instructor in business administration, was quoted in an Aug. 17 News Journal story about slimmed down specialty Yellow Pages. "The more focused the advertising, the more successful it generally is," Fang said.

Richard Wool, professor of chemical engineering, was quoted in an Aug. 16 News Journal story on biofuels and in an Aug. 15 story on the early roots of biotechnology.

Kenneth Campbell, associate professor of political science and international relations, was included in an Aug. 15 National Public Radio Morning Edition program on the re-release of the Winter Soldier documentary about atrocities committed during the Vietnam War. Campbell served in Vietnam and later joined the anti-war movement.

Kevin Kerrane, professor of English, David Smith, associate professor of biological sciences, James Elfers, library assistant, and Neil Lanctot, a history faculty member, were featured in an Aug. 14 News Journal story about their deep interest in baseball. Kerrane is author of Dollar Sign on the Muscle, Smith runs the Retrosheet statistical service, Elfers is author of award-winning The Tour to End All Tours and Lanctot is author of the acclaimed Negro League Baseball: The Rise and Ruin of a Black Institution.

Craig Cary, associate professor of marine studies, was quoted in an Aug. 14 News Journal story on deep-sea exploration and possible uses of exotic organisms that live in the extremes.

Bob Mulrooney, Cooperative Extension plant and soil science specialist, was quoted in an Aug. 13 News Journal story about the state’s corn and soybean crops.

Lynn Snyder-Mackler, professor of physical therapy, was featured in an Aug. 12 Reuters Health story about a study she conducted on patients undergoing total knee replacement. She found that the strength of the quadriceps muscles before surgery plays an important role in post-surgery functioning. The Reuters story was picked up by CNN, making its “ticker” on Saturday, and by MSNBC.

Dewey Caron, professor of entomology and applied ecology, was quoted in an Aug. 12 News Journal story about the return of cicadas.

Kelvin W. Ramsey, a scientist with the Delaware Geological Survey, was quoted in an Aug. 9 News Journal story about beach replenishment.
