12:57 p.m., April 29, 2005--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, staff and alumni.

Ralph Begleiter, Edward and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Distinguished Journalist in Residence at UD, was the focus of a widely distributed story concerning his Freedom of Information request and lawsuit that led to the release by the Pentagon of photographs of flag-draped coffins of U.S. soldiers. Begleiter was quoted April 29 by the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Associated Press and was featured in a page one story in the April 28 News Journal. "This is an important victory for the American people, for the families of troops killed in the line of duty during wartime and for the honor of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country," Begleiter told the Washington Post. "This significant decision by the Pentagon should make it difficult, if not impossible, for any U.S. government in the future to hide the human cost of war from the American people.”

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted April 28 in a Financial Times story on the New York Stock Exchange, in a Washington Post story on MCI and in a Bloomberg story on corporate governance changes at Bristol-Myers Squibb. As well, Elson was quoted April 27 in a Business Week online story about executive perquisites, in a Philadelphia Inquirer story on the Campbell Soup Co. chief executive officer and in a Reuters story on top IBM executives foregoing pay raises.

Edward Ratledge, director of the Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research at UD, was quoted in an April 28 News Journal story on the percentage of working adults in the state who have health insurance.

Rae D. Stabosz, associate director of the Foreign Language Media Center, was quoted in an April 17 News Journal story on the election of the new pope, reflecting as president of Catholic Scholars at UD on the need for “a man of prayer, a man of faith, a man of intelligence, an amiable man.” She was subsequently featured in an April 21 News Journal story about St. Blog's Parish, a community of “homestyle Catholic” bloggers.
