10:31 a.m., April 26, 2005--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, staff and alumni.

David P. Roselle, president of the University of Delaware, and David Weir, director of UD’s Delaware Biotechnology Institute, were quoted in April 26 stories by the Associated Press and the News Journal concerning a $6 million National Science Foundation grant for life sciences research. The story also was reported by WDEL-AM, WILM-AM, WMDT-TV and WHYY-TV.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in an April 26 Chicago Tribune story concerning investment bankers and the value of the New York Stock Exchange. Elson also was quoted in an April 25 Sacramento Bee story on the California Public Employees’ Retirement System’s move to end the plurality vote standard in corporate elections, in an April 24 New York Times story on Morgan Stanley and in an April 22 Wall Street Journal story on a drive to compel pharmaceutical companies to divide the jobs of chairman and chief executive officer. "Theoretically, it makes a lot of sense," Elson told the Wall Street Journal. "But it is harder in practice."

Amalia Amaki, curator of the Paul R. Jones Collection at UD, is featured in the March-April issue of Homes of Color magazine for her book A Century of African American Art: The Paul R. Jones Collection, which accompanies the current exhibition of the same name on view at Mechanical Hall and University Gallery in Old College.

Ralph Begleiter, Edward and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Distinguished Journalist in Residence at UD, was quoted in an April 25 Christian Science Monitor story on the Pentagon Channel. The military-produced programming has been criticized as propaganda, and Begleiter told the newspaper the on-air staff members “aren’t reporters. That's a hugely important distinction. They're not journalists. They're salesmen."

Roberta Golinkoff, H. Rodney Sharp Chair in Human Services, Education and Public Policy, was quoted in an April 23 Philadelphia Inquirer story on summer spa camps for children. "That's horrible," Golinkoff told the newspaper. "The idea that little girls are put in training to become beauty queens is so offensive to me. It's all about the outside, and it should be about the inside, about building self-esteem."

Edward Ratledge, director of the Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research at UD, was quoted in an April 23 News Journal story on the aging of Delaware’s population, noting a migration of retirees to Sussex County.

James Corbett, assistant professor of marine studies, was quoted in an April 21 Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle story concerning funding for research on pollution from ferries, barges and ocean-going cargo ships. "Shipping is an important component of air pollution that needs to be addressed to achieve air quality goals," Corbett told the newspaper.
