Hot dog vendor thrives on The Green

Jamel Nicot
11:16 a.m., May 4, 2005--Jamel Nicot’s favorite job is the polar opposite of a postal carrier--he doesn’t work in rain or snow or sleet or hail or dark of night.

Nicot works the lunch-hour shift every sunny weekday, serving hot dogs and snacks from a movable cart in front of Memorial Hall.

The cart, run by ARAMARK, is offered as a convenience for students, faculty and staff who want a bite on the go.

“You’ve got students who come through this way and just want to grab something fast and go,” Nicot said. “This way, they don’t have to worry about being late for class.’’

Regular hot dogs, at $1 apiece, are Nicot’s bestsellers. He’s been selling about 20 a day in the first three weeks of the season, sometimes slathered with chili or sauerkraut. The cart also carries oversized hot dogs, soft pretzels, sodas, chips and other snacks.

Nicot, 24, said he’s likes dealing with the students because they stop and talk with him and thank him. “You’ve got some nice people out here.’’

Nicot also likes working outdoors. “You get to see a lot of things and you get to know UD and some of the students,’’ he said. “I like to do new things.’’

He said he’s been thinking about enrolling at UD himself, as a music major. The first step: He’s applied for a full-time job, hoping to get college benefits.
