3:02 p.m., Sept. 14, 2005--Participants registering for the 2005 American Heart Association Heart Walk, Sunday, Sept. 11, stopped for a moment of reflection at exactly 8:45 a.m., when terrorists crashed the first jet airliner into New York City’s World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Marianne Carter, director of the Wellness Center and UD Walk co-coordinator said, “It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and the 9/11 memorial ceremony was very special. The Bells of Remembrance were rung at the exact time that the first plane hit the World Trade Center. In addition, many walkers brought food for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.”

Carter said they are still tallying the funds raised by UD for the walk as well as the number of teams and persons who participated, but she said “attendance was greater than usual.”

Richie Holland, manager of human resources and co-coordinator of this year’s UD team, said, “We are proud of the outpouring of support from the UD community for this very worthy cause especially on such a significant day and when so many are in need.”

Registration began at 8 a.m. and the walk at 9 at Dravo Plaza on the Riverfront. Walkers had a sunny, cool day to walk or run the 3.1 miles.

The 2005 Wilmington Heart Walk's goal is to raise $500,000.

“This money is crucial to the American Heart Association's continued development of innovative cardiovascular research, treatment and education initiatives,” Carter said.
