Delaware women’s hall of fame inductees have UD ties

12:04 p.m., March 24, 2005--Three women with UD connections have been inducted into the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women--Muriel E. Gilman, Teresa Haman and Valerie Woodruff. The Delaware Commission for Women chose the three for exceptional contributions that positively affected the lives of others.

Muriel E. Gilman of Wilmington, a member of the Visiting Committee for UD’s College of Health and Nursing Sciences, was inducted for her community service work as a volunteer with children and families. Gilman is assistant secretary of the board of The Delaware Community Foundation. She and her late husband Marvin, professor emeritus in UD’s College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, were the first husband and wife to receive the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce’s highest award, the Josiah Marvel Cup for outstanding service to the community.

Teresa Haman of Bear, an artist and admissions director at the Delaware College of Art and Design, was honored for helping talented, disadvantaged young people. She has established scholarships for students and is co-founder of Athletes With Intellectual Maturity. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in education, both at UD, in 1975 and 1977, repectively.

Valerie Woodruff of Bear, Delaware’s secretary of education, was honored for her move to put wellness centers in public schools. The commission also praised Woodruff’s efforts to increase accountability in education. She earned her master’s degree in education at UD in 1971.
