UD ice skaters qualify for Junior Grand Prix Final 4:56 p.m., Oct. 25, 2005--Two singles figure skaters and a pairs team training at the University of Delaware have qualified for the International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix Final to be held Nov. 24-27 in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The skaters are Christine Zukowski and Geoffrey Varner in singles and the pairs team of Bridget Namiotka and John Coughlin. To qualify, the skaters had to finish in the ISU Junior Grand Prix top eight in scoring based on their placements at two international competitions earlier this fall. Zukowski had strong showings at the Andorra Cup, where she finished second overall and first in the free skate, and the Croatia Cup, where she finished third. Zukowski, from Newark, is a member of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club (UDFSC). Varner finished third at the Andorra Cup and second at the Croatia Cup. He is from Palo Alto, Calif., and is a member of the Peninsula Skating Club. Namiotka and Coughlin finished first at the Croatia Cup and fourth at Montreal. Namiotka, from West Chester, Pa., is a member of the UDFSC and Coughlin, from Kansas City, Mo., is a member of the Silver Blades Figure Skating Club. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
