Class of 2005 votes to spruce up ‘The Beach’

9:06 a.m., April 15, 2005--The Class of 2005 has voted to make its legacy to UD a new and improved Harrington Beach.

Also known as The Beach, this grassy area between the Perkins Student Center and Gilbert/Harrington residence halls is routinely used by students for recreation and special events.

In March, 40 percent of 1,000 voting seniors decided to make $30,000 worth of improvements to Harrington Beach. That’s the amount seniors are trying to raise for their class gift.

Anyone interested in making a donation, may visit [www.udel.edu/seniorclass] or e-mail [hbarron@udel.edu]. Contributors will have their names and/or someone they wish to honor listed in the spring Commencement program.

Enhancements to The Beach will include landscaped seating areas with benches and a plaque to acknowledge the Class of 2005, according to Robert Davis, vice president of University development and alumni relations.

“The class gift allows seniors to say ‘Thank you’ for the opportunities they have received at UD and to show future generations how much UD meant to them. It’s also a way for the Class of 2005 to leave behind a lasting legacy,” Heather Barron, assistant director in University development, said.
