Buildings evacuated for smoke condition

6:15 p.m., March 30, 2005--Two UD buildings on Academy Street and East Delaware Avenue were evacuated on Tuesday, March 29, after smoke and odor spread inside the buildings.

UD Public Safety officers and local firefighters were called to the building shortly after 4 p.m. after researchers, who were creating a composite part with an epoxy resin inside a specialized oven in a lab on the first floor of the Center for Composite Materials, noticed that the materials were generating heat, smoke and a strong odor very quickly.

Experts from UD’s Department of Occupational Health and Safety arrived at the scene, and Public Safety officers evacuated Graham Hall as a precaution, Kevin Eichinger, chemical hygiene officer, said.

“The two buildings share a common hallway and some of the odor got into Graham Hall,” Eichinger said. “The smoke is mildly toxic, but we went through the buildings with gas meters to make sure that there were no harmful levels in the air and that it was safe for the occupants.”

Eichinger said there were no safety issues in either building, and Graham Hall was cleared for occupancy at about 4:45 p.m. The Center for Composite Materials was closed overnight to allow the odor to clear, but occupants were allowed to go inside and remove their belongings, he said.

No injuries were reported.
