Erica Armstrong Dunbar, assistant professor of history
3:30 p.m., May 20, 2005-More than 230 African-American Students of Distinction were recognized for their achievements in a special ceremony attended by family members and hosted by UD President David P. Roselle on May 7 in Clayton Hall.

Joining Roselle in recognizing the African-American students of distinction were Judith Y. Gibson, assistant vice president for affirmative action and multicultural programs, and keynote speaker Erica Armstrong Dunbar, assistant professor of history.

Musical performances at the ceremony included “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” composed by Margaret Bonds on a poem by Langston Hughes, and performed by baritone Nathan A. Hall, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, and accompanied by Jae-Hee Cha on piano. The closing musical selection featured “Walk Together Children,” arranged by Moses Hogan and performed by Hall and Cha.

Dunbar, in her talk, “A Long Road to Hoe: African Americans and the Personal Journey Through the Academy,” congratulated the audience for their achievements in the academy and in the community.

“The students in this room have proven themselves to be the cream of the crop, the best and brightest of the students at the University,” Dunbar said. “Today is the day when we celebrate your achievements as young scholars and enlightened men and women who have chosen to better themselves and the communities from which they come.”

The importance of community, Dunbar said, has been “a central theme for African Americans since their arrival in the ‘New World’ or to mainland North America almost 400 years ago.”

“Enslaved Africans turned to one another for crucial support to survive in a slave society that failed to consider them as human beings,” Dunbar said. “As African Americans journeyed through the centuries, they depended upon one another for employment, education and various other forms of communal support.”

In extending wishes for continued success to the honorees, Dunbar asked the students to “remember the assistance, support and guidance that you have received from others throughout the course of your life and offer it back to those who come after you.”

“You have done well on this long road. You have navigated the bumps and detours and have arrived at this splendid place called success.”
