UD signs exclusive study-abroad pact

Neophytos Neophytou (left), vice president of the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute, Lesa Griffiths, director of UD’s Center for International Studies, and Sanford Robbins, chairperson of the Department of Theatre at UD
3:28 p.m., May 11, 2005--UD study-abroad students can perform Medea on an ancient Cyprus stage this summer. The University has exclusive permission to bring American study-abroad students to the Cyprus Centre of International Theatre Institute because of an agreement forged May 4 between the center and the UD’s Center for International Studies and the Department of Theatre.

Heinz-Uwe Haus, professor of theatre, said the pact will allow UD study-abroad students to view professional plays at the center’s annual International Summer Institute for Ancient Greek Drama and Theatre, to take advantage of the international theatre expertise available in Cyprus during the summer institute and to join productions at the center.

Neophytos Neophytou, vice president of the center, came to UD recently to sign the agreement.

UD students can travel to Cyprus for a noncredit summer experience this year or register for credit courses beginning in 2006.

“It is wonderful to experience the Greek stage in the summer-the hot stones, the hospitality of the people there,’’ Haus said.
