Career services cited for exemplary web resources

2:16 p.m., Aug. 12, 2005--UD’s MBNA Career Services Center (CSC) web site has been selected as an “exemplary site for student services online” by the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications (WCET), an association of colleges and universities working to advance the effective use of technology in higher education.

The UD web site was chosen specifically for offering some of the career services center's most popular workshops via web streaming so they’re available anytime for students.

“We were pleased to be selected,” Jack Townsend, director of the MBNA Career Services Center, said. “WCET researchers survey sites and select the ones they consider offer best practices and highlight them to generate ideas and to help other schools develop their programs. It is nice to be recognized for what we are doing at UD so that other schools can emulate it.”

Through WCET’s Center for Transforming Student Services (CENTSS), UD will be highlighted online as a Best Practice Profile this fall. Townsend is providing detailed information about career services, including a description of the site, its characteristics and special features, goals, performance measures and outcomes.

“About four years ago, we originated a web stream for our orientation program, which is required of students who use our services, so that students could access it whenever it was convenient for them. It was highly successful, and now we have expanded the number of sites to 11 different workshops on the web, and we receive about 1,500 viewings each year,” Townsend said.

Topics include “eRecruiting Orientation”; “Resume Writing and Cover Letters,” after which students can get their resumes and letters reviewed by a career services staff member; “Job Search Strategies”; “The e-Job Search”; “Introduction to the Job Interview,” which can be followed by an appointment for a mock interview; “Preparing for the Second Interview”; “Dining Etiquette”; “Internship and Summer Job Success”; “Graduate Student: To Be or Not to Be”; “The 30-Second Commercial,” on introducing oneself; and “Transition, Temporary, ‘In the Meantime’ Jobs.”

In addition, the MBNA Career Services Center offers more than 300 programs each year on campus to different groups, as well as one-on-one help with job search coaching.
