Police seek victim of suspected hate crime

1:24 p.m., Oct. 13, 2005--Newark Police are seeking information about a suspected hate crime that is reported to have occurred around 1 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, on North Chapel Street, near Main Street in Newark.

A white 20-year-old UD student was assaulted by an unknown number of white men while walking with a group of friends on North Chapel Street. The men were burning a piece of clothing in the street and shouting. Their statements led the student to believe a black man may have been the victim of a hate crime.

After confronting the suspects, the student was surrounded, and one suspect struck him in the face with his fist. He also was burned with a cigarette on the chest as he was being struck. The student sustained several cuts and abrasions while being knocked to the ground during the assault. Others who witnessed the assault intervened, and the student's roommate was able to pull him away from the suspect.

The next day, the student was taken by UD Public Safety to the Christiana Emergency Room for treatment. UD Police convinced him to report the crime. On Oct. 11, he reported the incident to the Newark Police Department.

The Newark Police Department is seeking the black man who may have been the victim of an assault, as well as any information on the initial assault. Anyone with information on this subject is asked to contact Det. Paul Keld at (302) 366-7110, ext. 136.
