UD Chorale recording benefits Katrina victims
A flood of high school and college choral directors ordered the sheet music to the songs they heard UDs 60-member choir perform. Santa Barbara Publishing Co. also noticed. They were quite smitten with the choir, Paul D. Head, director, said. The publisher has actually been pursuing an ongoing relationship. So, when publisher Barbara Harlow got the idea to produce sheet music for a new song about New Orleans and give all the profits to hurricane relief, she turned to the UD Chorale. Seattle composer Melinda Bargreen wrote the words and music to Big Easy on My Mind. An Atlanta printing house put it on paper the same week. Then, the UD Chorale had one day to practice before recording it. The recording in MP-3 format was e-mailed to the California publisher. Santa Barbara Publishing will use the CD to promote the sheet music--helping choir directors imagine how the piece will sound when their groups perform it. The hope is theyll sell thousands, if not more, copies of this, and all the profits from the sheet music will be contributed to relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, Head said. Were flattered to have an opportunity to be involved. He said the choir members were happy to participate in a project that might make a difference for the hurricane victims. So many times you think, What can I do? but, with this, we feel that we might contribute to the greater good in a tangible way just by doing what we do, Head said. Santa Barbara Publishing Co. sent the sheet music and the chorales rendition off to the White House, noting the national nature of a piece written in Seattle, typeset in Atlanta, performed in Delaware and published in California to benefit residents of Mississippi, Texas, Alabama and Louisiana.
