Alums more than meet the challenge

10:02 a.m., March 17, 2005--Blue Hen alums showed impressive school spirit and support of UD by far exceeding the goals of the Alumni Challenge in 2004.

In September 2003, the Alumni Association announced that with a $100,000 challenge, it would match first-time alumni donor gifts through Dec. 31, 2004. The goal was to acquire 1,500 new donors, based on the previous fiscal year’s 794 new alumni donors.

The Challenge went over the top with 2,204 new donors (147 percent of the donor goal) and gifts of more than $126,000 (126 percent of the dollar goal).

The Office of Annual Giving contacted more than 70,000 nondonors via direct mail and through the Fund for Delaware Phone Program. Student callers said that many nondonors found the challenge program appealing because it doubled their gift to the University.

Alumni from the 1990s were the most responsive with more than 650 new donors. UD’s most recent graduates after 2000 had the second largest number of donors.

Thanks to the Alumni Challenge, the Delaware Diamonds Society, or those who contribute $1,000 or more, gained 79 new members.

“We are pleased that so many alumni rose to the Alumni Challenge to support their alma mater. The loyalty from its former students enables UD to move forward in accomplishing its goals as an outstanding university,” Robert R. Davis, vice president of University development and alumni relations, said.
