John Brennan appointed public relations director 3:53 p.m., Oct. 28, 2005--John Brennan, senior associate director of the Office of Public Relations, has been named director of the office and assistant to the president, effective Nov. 1, UD President David P. Roselle announced today. Mary J. Hempel, previous assistant to the president and director of the office, died unexpectedly Sept. 30. "I am very pleased that John Brennan has agreed to take leadership of the Office of Public Relations and to also serve as assistant to the president," Roselle said. "His remarkable partnership of more than 30 years with Mary Hempel easily qualifies him as the person most knowledgeable about the workings of that office. Moreover, I and many other University colleagues, including his immediate colleagues, have often benefited from John's assistance, good counsel and easy humor. "We are all supportive of Johns promotion and are entirely confident as to his ability to continue the high quality, proactive public relations and outreach activities that have become the trademark of public relations at the University of Delaware," he said. The Office of Public Relations is charged with managing the University's communications efforts, which include handling media relations and producing the University's online news site, UDaily, and the Messenger, a quarterly publication for donor alumni and friends, recent graduates and parents of current students. The office's Creative Services section provides design and photography support across the campus, and an advertising group generates revenue for the University through sponsorships and a variety of advertising opportunities. In addition, the office is home to the University's award-winning mascot team, which includes YoUDee, Air YoUDee and Baby Blue. Brennan joined the University's public relations staff in 1972 and has held several positions in the office, including associate editor, editor, assistant director and associate director. He has been senior associate director of the office since 2003. He has been a member of teams that were awarded University Innovation Awards, and he also has received the Professional Merit Award. He is a member of the Delaware Diamonds Society. In 2004, Brennan received the Downtown Newark Partnership's Selena Bing Award as University volunteer of the year. In the community, he served on the Board of Directors of the Newark Day Nursery for several years, including a term as president. Brennan holds a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
