UD skater competes internationally Oct. 1

Kimmie Meissner
12:10 p.m., Sept. 28, 2004--Kimmie Meissner, 2004 U.S. junior champion and World Junior silver medalist, will compete in the 2004 Campbell's International Figure Skating Classic on Friday, Oct. 1, at the St. Paul (Minn.) Xcel Energy Center.

The 14-year-old Meissner, who hails from Bel Air, Md., trains under Coach Pam Gregory at UD’s Fred Rust Ice Arena, where she is a member of the University of Delaware Figure Stating Club.

In her debut at Campbell's International Figure Skating Classic, Meissner will compete against Michelle Kwan, five-time World and eight-time U.S. champion; Sasha Cohen, current World silver medalist (USA); Shizuka Arakawa, 2004 World champion (Japan); Miki Ando, 2004 World fourth-place finisher (Japan); Julia Sebestyen, 2004 World sixth-place finisher (Hungary); Jennifer Kirk, 2004 U.S. bronze medalist; and Amber Corwin, 2004 U.S. fourth-place finisher.

Meissner began skating at age 6 and jump-started her junior-level career with a second-place finish in September 2003 at the Junior Grand Prix in Sofia, Bulgaria. She won her first Junior Grand Prix gold—and her first international gold medal—at the Junior Grand Prix event in October 1999 in Slovenia.

ABC Sports will broadcast the event nationwide from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 10.
