Carl W. Jacobson, director of UD’s Management Information Services, and Jason S. Cash, associate director of Network and Systems Services, were quoted in a Sept. 24 Chronicle of Higher Education report on open-source software. Jacobson discussed commercial technical support for the uPortal project, and Cash discussed issues regarding antispam software.

Kenneth J. Campbell, associate professor of political science and international relations, was quoted in a Sept. 24 Newark Star-Ledger story about concerns that the military draft will be revived. A draft, which the Star-Ledger reports is not in the works, would create a “firestorm” on college campuses, Campbell said.

Linda Carey, director of student housing services, and several UD students were quoted in a Sept. 24 News Journal story about the use of modern methods in the roommate assignment process.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, was quoted in a Sept. 23 Associated Press story on the indictment of former Computer Associates International Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Kumar in connection with a multibillion dollar accounting scandal at the software company.

Elson also was quoted in a Sept. 23 USA Today story on problems at Fannie Mae, in a Sept. 23 Philadelphia Inquirer story on the resignation of ARAMARK Chief Executive Officer William Leonard and in a Sept. 21 Reuters story about how Michael Mondavi will receive 50 cases of wine as severance when he resigns from Robert Mondavi Corp. "It's unusual but given the nature of the business and the family involvement it's not all that surprising,” Elson told Reuters. “It's not eye popping, maybe cork popping."

Carlton Cooper, assistant professor of biological sciences, was quoted in a Sept. 23 News Journal story on the need for increased representation of minorities in the medical field.

Joel Best, chairperson of the Department of Sociology, was quoted in a sidebar to a Sept. 21 Wall Street Journal story on spam and its effect on the workplace.

Meryl Gardner, associate professor of business administration, was quoted in a Sept. 20 Cincinnati Business Courier story on Federated Department Stores.

James Butkiewicz, professor of economics, was quoted in a Sept. 19 News Journal story on the consumer price index.

Karl V. Steiner, associate director of the Delaware Biotechnology Institute at UD, was quoted in a Sept. 21 News Journal story on virtual surgery. Researchers are using leading-edge technology to develop an interactive surgical simulation system.
