UD’s printing plant scoops top prize

4:48 p.m., July 19, 2004--The University of Delaware’s 2004 engagement calendar recently scooped the top prize at In-Print 2004, a nationwide printing contest exclusively for printing plants within organizations. The Best of Show award went to UD’s Graphic Communications Center, which printed the calendar.

“What it tells me is that our quality is outstanding and can be rated against any other printer,” Rodney Brown, manager, said. “Our organization is set up the same as a commercial printer, as far as the way we do things.”

Winning the top prize and five additional first-place awards during the show last month was the result of years of hard work, experience, equipment upgrades and enthusiastic staff, Brown said.

“It’s just such an honor to receive an award from your peers when you know the competition is very stiff,” Brown said. “I could not wait to come back and share it with the staff. We had doughnuts as we showed the awards off and talked about what we were looking forward to doing in the coming year.”

Five printing industry experts selected the winners from more than 500 entries during the contest last month in Philadelphia. The event, sponsored by In-Plant Graphics and the International Publishing Management Association, was open to all in-house printing plants in the U.S. Among this year’s 101 winners were 44 first-place prizes.

UD won top prizes for fliers, the UD calendar, which also won best of show, cards and programs, technical documents in the non-offset category, and cards and programs in the non-offset category.

The award-winning calendar is a weekly planner designed by Barbara Broge of the University's Office of Public Relations. It features more than 100 color photos showing the flowers, foliage, buildings and statues around the Newark campus during all of the four seasons.

The calendar recognized UD’s landscape engineer Tom Taylor for planning and members of Facilities’ Grounds Services crew for maintaining campus gardens, grounds and landscaping.
