UD wins national award for campus safety

Bob Stozek, associate vice president for facilities, Robin Elliot, director of occupational health and safety, and David Hollowell, executive vice president and University treasurer
4:43 p.m., Aug. 27, 2004--UD took top honors in the Complete Safety Program category at the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Division of the National Safety Council conference last month in Chicago.

“This is the top award of our professional organization for safety and health professionals at colleges and universities, and we are pleased that UD was selected for this recognition as a leader in campus safety,” Robin Elliott, director of occupational health and safety, said. Only two other schools—Ohio University and the University of California at San Diego—have received the award since the organization expanded its criteria two years ago.

“We won the award five years ago and have built on and expanded our program for this year’s award,” Elliott said.

“We know that our Occupational Health and Safety professionals do an outstanding job, and it is rewarding when such performance is recognized by a national organization of their peers,” David Hollowell, executive vice president and University treasurer, said.

The organization promotes the environmental health and safety of college campuses, and the award encourages colleges and universities to show ”excellence in designing and implementing their own safety programs and to incorporate novel and/or original efforts while complying with standardized regulations.”

The application asked specific questions in six categories: administrative leadership and safety organization, general and fire safety, environmental management, biological safety, radiological safety and chemical safety/chemical waste. For example, under environmental management, questions cover such topics as asbestos management, storage tank management and recycling.

Elliott documented UD’s safety program, and Donna Bowman helped assemble and design the entry. UD’s evacuation plan for buildings in case of fire or other emergencies received a separate Award of Recognition from the National Safety Council.
