UDFSC’s Kimmie Meissner 3rd after short program

9:39 a.m., March 2, 2005--Kimmie Meissner of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club is in third place following the short program in the International Skating Union’s Junior World Championships, being held in Kitchener, Ontario.

The short program was skated Tuesday night, and Meissner trails leader Mao Asada of Japan and fellow American Alissa Czisny as the competitors prepare for Thursday’s long program.

Asada, 14, is the Japanese junior champion. She earned a technical score of 33.26 and a presentation score of 26.85 for a total of 60.11 points. Czisny received a technical score of 30.05 and a presentation score of 22.86 for a total of 52.91, and Meissner received a technical score of 28.15 and a presentation score of 24.52 for a total of 52.67 points.

Rounding out the top five skaters are Binshu Xu of China and Emily Hughes of the United States.

Meissner, who rebounded from a rocky preliminary skate on Monday, said she was pleased with her effort. “Short programs are nice, because they’re short. You don’t have to wait too long. I think just everybody was on their game tonight, and it was a great competition,” she said.

Another UD Figure Skating Club competitor, 19-year-old Shaun Rogers, will take to the ice today in a preliminary skate in the men’s competition. Both Rogers and Meissner are coached by UD’s Pam Gregory.
