Trustees recognize contributions by three members of UD community David Hollowell, executive vice president and treasurer, Kathleen Hollowell, director of the Mathematics and Science Education Resource Center, and T.W. Fraser Russell, Allan P. Colburn Professor of Chemical Engineering and vice provost for research, were recognized by special Board resolutions. David and Kathleen Hollowell were cited for their 17 years of service to the UD community and their endowment of the Kathleen and David Hollowell Professorship, the 100th endowed professorship at UD. The Kathleen and David Hollowell Professorship will support a position in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and will recognize a faculty member who is actively involved with teaching, research and service in the area of secondary school mathematics education. The resolution also recognized the milestone of establishing 100 endowed professorships, noting that such "professorships serve as models for high standards and define what excellence means in teaching, research and service." In the early 1990s, the University had fewer than 10 endowed professorships, funded by a total of about $4.9 million. Today, that endowment is approximately $63 million and supports 105 professorships and chairs. Russell was recognized by the board for his leadership in bringing "a new spirit of effective communications and cooperation" between the Office of Vice Provost for Research and the UD research community.
Under Russell’s leadership, the board noted that UD has significantly increased its technology-transfer activities, resulting in the formation of start-up companies based on UD technologies and the new licensing of UD technology to industry. Also recognized were his efforts in moving UD technologies into the private sector with increased returns to UD through the creation of the UD Technology Corp. A UD alumnus with four decades of faculty service, Russell was recognized by the board for serving with distinction as director of the Institute for Energy Conversion, chairperson of the Department of Chemical Engineering and acting dean of the College of Engineering.
Russell, who also was recognized by the board for his achievements as an outstanding teacher, researcher and academic leader, is a recipient of UD Excellence in Teaching Award and the Francis Alison Award. He also is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. "Dr. Russell has put into practice his belief that it is important to express appreciation to one’s colleagues, and that the administration benefits from the infusion of new ideas and that being honest and direct is the only respectable mode of discourse," Howard E. Cosgrove, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said. "He also has shown that giving is better than receiving, as exemplified by the teaching fellowship that he and his wife, Shirley, generously endowed, and that a walk in the woods is always good for the heart and mind." In earlier remarks, Provost Dan Rich noted that Russell, who has served as vice provost for research for the past five years, will return to teaching following a sabbatical leave. Carolyn A. Thoroughgood, dean of the College of Marine Studies, will serve as vice provost for research, and Nancy M. Targett, professor of marine studies, will serve as interim dean of the College of Marine Studies. Article by Jerry Rhodes To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
